Answers to the most common questions about pool construction, remodeling, resurfacing, and our process at Pool Creations.
New custom pool construction in Southwest Florida by Pool Creations typically ranges from $100,000 to $175,000. The final price depends on pool size and shape, depth profile, interior surface finish, coping and deck material, water features (spa, vanishing edge, deck jets, etc.), screen enclosure, and equipment package. For bespoke projects featuring vanishing edges, resort-style water features, premium outdoor living structures, or fully custom designs, these projects typically start at $250,000.
Yes. Pool Creations, a custom pool builder in Venice, FL, works with several financing partners to offer competitive loan options for new pool construction and remodeling projects. Financing options include fixed-rate home improvement loans, home equity loans, and pool-specific financing programs. Visit our Financing page or call (941) 366-6000 to discuss options before your consultation.
Our contracts are fully itemized and include every component of the project: excavation, steel, gunite shell, plumbing, electrical, coping, tile, deck, interior surface, equipment, and all associated permits and inspections. Payment milestones are tied directly to completed construction phases.
We do not use hidden costs or surprise change orders. The only items that can change a contract price are owner-requested changes to scope, unforeseen underground conditions (such as buried debris or rock), or utility conflicts discovered during excavation. All of which are communicated immediately and require written authorization before any additional work proceeds.
Properties in certain locations require a state permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in addition to the standard local building permit issued by your county or city. If your property falls into one of these categories, DEP permitting must be completed before construction can begin and adds significant time to the pre-construction phase.
PROPERTIES THAT TYPICALLY REQUIRE A DEP PERMIT: Properties located on or adjacent to waterways (canals, lakes, rivers, bays, or the Gulf), barrier islands such as Siesta Key, Casey Key, Manasota Key, Lemon Bay, or Boca Grande, riverfront properties, and properties within or near state-designated environmentally protected areas or wetland buffers.
WHY A DEP PERMIT IS REQUIRED: Florida law requires DEP review for construction activities near water bodies and sensitive environmental areas to assess potential impacts on water quality, wetlands, and protected habitats. The DEP permit process involves a separate application, environmental review, and in some cases a site inspection by state regulators.
HOW LONG IT TAKES: DEP permit timelines vary based on the complexity of the environmental review and the current workload of the regional DEP office. In straightforward cases, DEP approval can take 4 to 8 weeks. In cases involving wetland mitigation, protected species, or contested applications, the process can take significantly longer. Pool Creations will advise you on the expected timeline for your specific property during the design consultation.
HOW POOL CREATIONS HANDLES IT: Pool Creations manages the DEP permit application on your behalf as part of the overall permitting process. We coordinate with the appropriate DEP regional office, prepare the required documentation, and keep you informed throughout the review period. If your property requires a DEP permit, we will identify this at the outset so it can be factored into your project timeline from the start.
According to Pool Creations, a custom pool builder in Venice, FL, once permits are in hand, the active construction phase of a typical pool in Southwest Florida takes approximately 10 to 16 weeks. All timeframes extend depending on the size and scope of your project a standard pool with a basic deck will move through each phase faster than a freeform pool with a spa, vanishing edge, outdoor kitchen, and custom screen enclosure. Pool Creations will provide a project-specific schedule during your design consultation so you have a realistic timeline for your exact project and property.
Pool Creations follows a 12-step construction process: (1) Design consultation and 3D rendering, (2) Contract signing and permit application, (3) Layout staking, (4) Excavation, (5) Steel rebar installation and county inspection, (6) Gunite shell application, (7) Plumbing installation and pressure test, (8) Electrical and bonding, (9) Coping and waterline tile, (10) Deck installation, (11) Screen enclosure (if included), (12) Interior surface application and pool startup. You receive updates at every major milestone.
You do not need to be home during construction. Our project managers coordinate all access, inspections, and deliveries. We will communicate with you at each major milestone and are available by phone throughout the project. Many of our clients are seasonal residents or work full-time and manage their projects remotely without any issues.
Pool Creations (Venice, FL) manages the complete permitting process for every pool construction project. We prepare and submit all permit applications to the appropriate county building department, coordinate all required inspections, and handle any plan review comments. You do not interact with permitting offices at any stage of the project.
Yes. Every Pool Creations custom pool project begins with a full 3D rendering before any contract is signed or permit is filed. Pool Creations installs natural travertine, premium porcelain pavers, and high-quality concrete paver systems for pool decks in Southwest Florida. Travertine is the most popular choice for Southwest Florida pools due to its natural beauty, heat resistance, and durability in coastal climates. All deck materials are selected for both aesthetic quality and long-term performance in Florida's heat and humidity.
Yes. Pool Creations designs and builds pools with integrated spas, vanishing (infinity) edges, raised spillover spas, deck jets, bubblers, grottos, and custom water walls. Each feature is designed as an integrated element of the overall pool environment during the initial design phase, not added on as an afterthought.
Signs that a pool needs resurfacing include rough or sharp surfaces that scratch feet, visible staining that cannot be removed with chemical treatment, pitting or spalling of the surface, chalky or faded water color, or a surface age of 10 or more years. Pool Creations in Venice, FL offers free pool resurfacing assessments call (941) 366-6000.
Pool resurfacing typically takes 5 to 10 days from draining to refill, depending on pool size and the scope of additional work (tile replacement, coping, equipment). After the new surface is applied, the pool requires a 28-day startup process before it is fully ready for regular use.
Yes. Pool Creations frequently combines resurfacing with equipment upgrades, new waterline tile, coping replacement, and deck renovation. Combining work reduces total project time and cost compared to scheduling separate projects. We will provide a comprehensive quote covering all requested work.
Yes. Pool Creations (Venice, FL) remodels and resurfaces pools regardless of who built them originally. We will assess the current condition of the pool shell, equipment, and deck and provide a detailed scope of work and quote for all recommended improvements.
Pool Creations is a certified Pentair warranty center and installs Pentair equipment as its primary product line across all new construction and remodeling projects. This includes IntelliCenter automation systems, IntelliFlo3 variable speed pumps, IntelliChlor Plus salt chlorine generators, UltraTemp and MasterTemp heaters, IntelliBrite 5G LED lighting, and the full range of Pentair water features and accessories. We also service most major brands.
Yes. Pool Creations (Venice, FL) installs and programs Pentair IntelliCenter automation systems on new construction and retrofit projects. IntelliCenter allows you to control your pool, spa, lighting, water features, and heating from a smartphone app or wall-mounted touchscreen. We handle complete installation, wiring, programming, and homeowner training.
VS (Variable Speed) and VSF (Variable Speed and Flow) are two tiers of variable speed pool pump technology. Both save significantly more energy than single-speed pumps, but they differ in how they control the motor.
VS PUMP (Variable Speed): A VS pump allows you to program the motor to run at different RPM (revolutions per minute) speeds at different times of day. You set the speed the pump runs at that speed. The Pentair IntelliFlo VS is a common example. You might program it to run at 1,750 RPM for filtration and 3,450 RPM when running a water feature. VS pumps are the standard choice for most residential pools.
VSF PUMP (Variable Speed and Flow): A VSF pump adds a built-in flow meter that measures the actual gallons per minute (GPM) flowing through the system in real time. Instead of setting a speed (RPM), you set a target flow rate (GPM) and the pump automatically adjusts its speed to maintain that exact flow regardless of changing conditions such as a dirty filter increasing resistance. The Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF is our standard installation on new construction. VSF pumps are more precise, more efficient over time, and better suited for automation systems that need consistent hydraulic performance.
WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE: For most residential pools, a VS pump is excellent and will deliver 50–80% energy savings over a single-speed pump. A VSF pump is the better choice if you have a complex system with multiple water features, a spa, or a Pentair IntelliCenter automation system the flow feedback allows the automation to optimize performance automatically. Pool Creations installs the IntelliFlo3 VSF as our standard equipment on all new builds.
A variable speed pump like the Pentair IntelliFlo3 adjusts its motor speed to match the actual demand of your pool system rather than running at full power continuously. This typically reduces pump energy consumption by 50 to 90 percent compared to a single-speed pump. Florida building code now requires variable speed pumps on all new pool construction. Pool Creations installs the IntelliFlo3 on every new build and recommends it for equipment replacement projects.
A salt chlorine generator like the Pentair IntelliChlor Plus converts dissolved salt in your pool water into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. The system continuously produces a steady, low level of chlorine rather than relying on periodic manual additions. Salt pools typically feel softer on skin and eyes than traditionally chlorinated pools and require less hands-on chemical management. Pool Creations installs and services IntelliChlor Plus systems on new construction and retrofit projects.
Both are excellent options the right choice depends on whether natural gas is available at your property and how you plan to use your pool.
HEAT PUMP (Electric): A heat pump works by extracting warmth from the ambient air and transferring it into the water similar to how a refrigerator works in reverse. It is highly energy-efficient, typically costing 50–80% less to operate than a gas heater. The Pentair UltraTemp is our standard recommendation for new construction. Best for: year-round pool owners who heat consistently and want the lowest monthly operating cost. Limitation: heat pumps work best when air temperatures are above 50°F, making them ideal for Florida's climate. They heat more slowly than gas (raising water temperature 1–2°F per hour vs. 3–5°F for gas).
GAS HEATER (Natural Gas or Propane): A gas heater burns natural gas or propane to heat pool water directly. It heats rapidly regardless of air temperature and can raise water temperature quickly on demand. The Pentair MasterTemp is our preferred gas heater. Best for: pools used seasonally or infrequently, or for heating a spa quickly before use. Limitation: operating costs are significantly higher than a heat pump, and if natural gas is not available at your property, you will need a propane tank adding installation cost and ongoing fuel delivery logistics.
IF NATURAL GAS IS AVAILABLE: You have the most flexibility. Many Pool Creations customers choose a dual-heater setup a heat pump for daily pool heating and a gas heater for rapid spa heating. This gives you the efficiency of a heat pump with the on-demand speed of gas for the spa.
IF NATURAL GAS IS NOT AVAILABLE: A heat pump is almost always the better choice. Propane is significantly more expensive than electricity in Florida, making a gas heater costly to operate. A heat pump will provide reliable, efficient heating for both pool and spa year-round.
Call (941) 366-6000 and we will assess your property's utility connections and recommend the right heating solution for your specific project.
A typical residential pool in Southwest Florida uses between 150 and 600 kWh of electricity per month, depending on equipment type, run time, and features. Here is a breakdown of the main contributors:
POOL PUMP: This is by far the largest energy consumer. A single-speed pump (1.5–2 HP) running 8 hours per day uses approximately 300–500 kWh/month. A variable speed pump (Pentair IntelliFlo3) running the same hours but at reduced speeds uses 50–150 kWh/month a savings of 60–80%.
POOL HEATER (Heat Pump): A heat pump like the Pentair UltraTemp draws 5–7 kW while running. At 4–6 hours of run time per day during cooler months, that adds 600–1,260 kWh/month when actively heating. During Florida summers, the heater may rarely run at all.
LED POOL LIGHTS: LED lights like the Pentair IntelliBrite 5G draw approximately 60–100 watts. Running 4 hours per evening adds only 7–12 kWh/month a negligible cost compared to the pump.
SALT CHLORINE GENERATOR: A Pentair IntelliChlor Plus draws 200–600 watts depending on output setting. At 8 hours/day, that is approximately 48–144 kWh/month.
AUTOMATION AND CONTROLS: IntelliCenter and similar systems draw minimal standby power typically 1–5 kWh/month.
TOTAL ESTIMATE: A pool with a variable speed pump, LED lights, salt system, and no heater running typically adds $20–$50/month to your electric bill at Florida rates (~$0.13–0.16/kWh). A pool with a single-speed pump and active heat pump heating can add $100–$200/month or more during cooler months.
Use our Pool Heater Cost Calculator and Variable Speed Pump Savings Calculator on the Equipment Tools page to get a personalized estimate based on your pool size and local utility rates.
Common signs that pool equipment needs replacement include a pump that runs loudly, loses prime frequently, or fails to maintain adequate flow; a heater that takes excessively long to heat the water or displays fault codes; a filter that requires backwashing more frequently than normal; or a control system that is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Pool Creations provides equipment assessments as part of any service call or remodeling consultation.

Proper pool water balance in Florida requires managing pH (7.2–7.6), total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), calcium hardness (200–400 ppm), and cyanuric acid (30–50 ppm for outdoor pools). Florida's heat and sun accelerate chemical consumption, so testing weekly is recommended. Bring a water sample to our Venice store and our computerized testing system will analyze your water and generate a precise dosage recommendation based on your pool's volume.
