Saltwater Pool System Problems in Southwest Florida

Saltwater pools have become the dominant choice for new pool construction in Southwest Florida, and for good reason: they produce a softer swimming experience and reduce the need to handle and store chlorine tablets. But saltwater systems in Florida's climate come with specific maintenance challenges that are worth understanding before problems develop.

Salt Cell Scaling

The salt cell, also called a chlorine generator, is the core component of a saltwater system. It uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt into chlorine. In Florida's hard water, calcium scale builds up on the cell plates over time, reducing chlorine output. A cell that is not producing adequate chlorine will allow algae to develop even when the salt level appears correct.

Low Salt Level

Saltwater systems require a specific salt concentration: typically 2,700-3,400 ppm depending on the manufacturer. If the salt level drops below the minimum, the cell will stop producing chlorine and the system will display a low salt warning. Salt levels drop due to dilution from rain and splash-out. In Florida's rainy season, salt levels should be checked more frequently.

High Cyanuric Acid (CYA)

Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) protects chlorine from UV degradation, which is important in Florida's intense sun. However, CYA levels that are too high reduce the effectiveness of the chlorine your salt cell produces. In saltwater pools, CYA should be maintained between 60-80 ppm. If CYA has accumulated above 100 ppm, partial water replacement may be necessary to bring it back into range.

Corrosion of Metal Components

Salt is corrosive to certain metals. Pool equipment, ladders, handrails, and light fixtures that are not rated for saltwater use can corrode prematurely in a saltwater pool environment. If you are converting an existing pool to saltwater, a pool professional should evaluate whether your existing equipment is compatible.

pH Drift

Saltwater pools tend to drift toward higher pH over time because the electrolysis process releases hydrogen gas, which raises pH. High pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and can cause calcium scaling on pool surfaces and equipment. pH should be checked weekly and adjusted as needed.

How long does a salt cell last in Florida? Most salt cells last 3-7 years in Florida's climate. Cells in pools with consistently high calcium hardness or that are not cleaned regularly tend to fail on the shorter end of that range.
